ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Fathers have been increasingly involved in the pregnancy and birth of their children, but paternal interventions are still required to relocate the father in his role of co-responsibility in parenting. OBJECTIVE: To observe the paternal behavior-attitude towards the child and the amount of oxytocin (OT) secreted at birth in parents prepared (in a special way) for childbirth. METHOD: Pilot study of 8 months, part of a larger qualitative-quantitative research of two phases. The initial qualitative phase developed a male preparatory intervention for the birth, with emphasis on the father-child bonding. The quantitative phase corresponded to the pilot of the antenatal paternal intervention. RESULTS: Fathers actively witnessed the moment of delivery and the mother-child attachment. Subsequently, all of them opted for physical skin-to-skin contact with their child. Paternal OT experienced a (non-significant) increase during father-child contact, compared to baseline OT (immediately after birth). CONCLUSIONS: Males prepared, sensitized and involved with their child since pregnancy would experience variations in the amount of OT when they make father-child skin-to-skin contact at childbirth. Experimental research with a larger sample of participants is required to categorically reach a conclusion.

ABSTRACT

Postpartum skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is a health care practice strongly advised by the WHO because of the long- and short-term benefits for both maternal and newborn health. This update summarizes the main findings supporting the recommendation to perform SSC during the immediate postpartum period, specifically the benefits on breastfeeding (BF) and neonatal jaundice (NI). The results show that SSC increases several indicators of breastfeeding success, including: increased effectiveness of the first breastfeeding, greater probability of maintaining BF at 4 months, increased BF period on average, greater probability of exclusive BF at 6 months. No greater benefits were found when initiating SSC before 10 minutes, nor when prolonging it for more than 60 minutes. In addition, SSC indirectly decreases the probability of presenting NI, because it increases the frequency of BF, an indicator that is indirectly associated with bilirubin levels in the newborn. CONCLUSION: A review of the specialized literature allows us to conclude that postpartum skin-to-skin contact (SSC) has significantly positive effects on breastfeeding and may represent benefits in bilirubin levels in the newborn.

ABSTRACT

With implant dentistry, many problems related to rehabilitative treatments can be solved. When a patient loses a tooth element, nerve endings that decrease tactile function in that region are removed. Halitosis is a common factor in implant prostheses, due to greater difficulty in cleaning. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the sensitivity and halitosis of 48 patients (n = 48), in four distinct groups: Group 1 (unitary fixed prostheses); Group 2 (multiple fixed prostheses); Group 3 (overdenture type prosthesis); Group 4 (fixed protocol type prostheses). The measurement of halitosis in patients will be through a Halimeter (FitScan Breath Checker - Tanita, Japan) and the so-matosensory function in peri-implant soft tissues through the psychophysical test of light touch (LTS) using von frey monofilaments (Aesthesio ® - Exact). Measurements were taken in 4 different periods: at the time of placement of the healers (T1), 30 days after the installation of the healers (T2), at the time of installation of the prosthesis (T3) and 30 days after the installation of the prosthesis (T4) . After the collected data, a statistical and comparative analysis was performed between the groups. It was possible to observe that an interaction between the factors time, condition and type of prosthesis significantly interfered in the mean values of the sensation to touch using von frey monofilaments (P = 0.001). It was possible to verify that there was an association between the level of halitosis and the analysis time for the use of protocol prosthesis and for overdenture prosthesis. However, the same did not occur for single or multiple splinted prostheses. Without group protocol (P = 0.002) and without group overdenture (P = 0.002), the count that presented a statistically significant finding was strong or intense odor at the time of reopening and 30 days after prosthesis installation. As for sensitivity to touch, all groups obtained results obtained from increased sensitivity to touch during and after installation of the prosthesis compared to the initial one(AU)

ABSTRACT

Cartridge cases are crucial physical evidence in gun-related crimes. The successful identification of the touch DNA on cartridge cases can help to screen the suspects and reconstruct the gun-related crime scene. With the improvement of DNA extraction methods and the sensitivity of amplification kit, forensic examiners are expected to obtain more valuable information by testing the touch DNA on cartridge cases. In practical cases, the touch DNA detection on cartridge cases often encounters with low DNA content degradation, mixing and the gunshot residual interference, which brings more challenges to DNA examination and identification. This article reviews forensic research of touch DNA on the cartridge cases from the aspects of factors affecting touch DNA on cartridge cases, advances in the extraction and amplification methods, and the practical applications in order to provide reference for forensic identification of touch DNA on the cartridge cases in real cases.

ABSTRACT

Tactile defensiveness is one of the first sensory integration dysfunctions described by Jean Ayres. However, for the diagnosis, evaluation procedures based on the observation of the child's performance are lacking, and instead, parents' reports are usually used almost exclusively. Based on several theoretical foundations, a structured procedure of clinical observations of tactile modulation was designed, consisting of two games that expose children to tactile stimuli. The observation was applied in a private clinic, using recording used for the purpose of documentation in clinical records. The objective of this research is to describe the tactile defensiveness signs that may be detected with this procedure. Through a guideline with 29 items of dichotomous response, 83 clinical records were retrospectively examined, from a clinical population of children with and without tactile defensiveness, aged 2 to 11 years. The results of a sample of children with tactile defensiveness were compared with another one of children without tactile defensiveness, through descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests. The performance of children with tactile defensiveness are significantly different from children without tactile defensiveness. In addition, this instrument can contribute to the diagnostic process of tactile defensiveness, through the analysis of indicators that suggest the diagnosis, or the specific identification of relevant signs of tactile defensiveness.

ABSTRACT

Early skin-to-skin contact (SSC) between mothers and healthy term newborns is a key part of the Unicef Baby Friendly Initiative Standards. SSC immediately after birth provides cardio-respiratory stability, improves prevalence and duration of breastfeeding, improves maternal-infant bonding and decreases maternal stress. There is a concern about cases of sudden unexpected postnatal collapse during a period of SSC with the infant prone on the mother ́s chest. Said collapse includes both severe apparent life-threatening event and sudden unexpected early neonatal death in the first week of life. Even if considered rare, consequences are serious with death in half of the cases and remaining disability in majority of the cases reported. For these reasons during SSC and for at least the first 2 hours after delivery, health care personnel in the delivery and recovery room should observe and assess for any sign of decompensation in the infant

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to identify and analyze meanings attributed to practices related to prostate cancer prevention among men. A qualitative methodology was employed, with semi-structured interviews being conducted with 21 men in the city of Vitoria da Conquista, Bahia, between July and August of 2017. Data analysis was based on a dialectical hermeneutic approach. We found that practices related to prostate cancer prevention were based on scarce information and permeated by a sense of fear of the disease, which was thought of as a death sentence. Additionally, these feelings were compounded by the repercussions of rectal examination, perceived as a violation of one's masculinity. We were able to observe that practices devised to prevent prostate cancer reflect the repercussions of conceptions of masculinity regarding men's health care, where manliness and toughness can be susceptible by the touch.

ABSTRACT

This paper discusses the short-term memory of vibro-tactile perception of human fingertips. By using a self-developed vibro-tactile expression device, a recall experiment was firstly carried out among 20 subjects aged 20-30 (10 males and 10 females) to discover the memory span about the vibro-tactile perception of human fingertips. Within this memory span, a cognitive experiment analyzing the recognition accuracy and the reaction time was carried out. The results showed: (1) The vibro-tactile memory span of human fingertip is 4 ± 1; (2) The vibro-tactile memory span increases as the discrete intensity between vibration stimuli increases; (3) Too long or too short vibration duration will reduce the vibro-tactile memory span, and the optimal vibration duration for men is 400 ms, for women is 300 ms; (4) The more the number of vibration stimuli is perceived by the human fingertip, the lower the recognition accuracy and the longer the reaction time it needs; (5) Compared with the vibration stimuli in disorder, people are more likely to remember the vibration stimuli in increasing/decreasing order; (6) The information extraction mechanism of the short-term memory about fingertip vibro-tactile perception bases a point to point scanning process among these stimuli. These results help to understand the human fingertip tactile characteristics and provide a physiological basis for the study of tactile feedback technologies.

ABSTRACT

Descriptive cross-sectional study with 417 pregnant women and 388 lactating women, belonging to a Comprehensive Care Program in Bogotá. A modular survey was applied with sociodemographic and health variables analyzed by frequency distributions, central tendency, and dispersion, with bivariate and multivariate analyses used to calculate odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals. 17% were under 18 years of age. Only 66.8% of all of the women had immediate skin-to-skin contact with their child. The risk factors for skin-to-skin contact and early initiation of breastfeeding were type of delivery (cesarean) (OR: 23.15, 95% Cl: 12.99,41.25) and (OR: 2.6, 95% Cl: 1.43, 4.73) respectively; In addition, newborn hospitalization for more than 3 days was also a risk factor for the early initiation of breastfeeding (OR: 2.85, 95% Cl: 1.42, 5.72). Not having skin-to-skin contact between the mother and her newborn was a risk factor for the early initiation of breastfeeding (OR: 2.43; Cl: 1.34; 4.41).

ABSTRACT

One of the primary means of communicating with a baby is through touch. Nurturing physical touch promotes healthy physiological development in social mammals, including humans. Physiology influences wellbeing and psychosocial functioning. The purpose of this paper is to explore the connections among early life positive and negative touch and wellbeing and sociomoral development. In study 1, mothers of preschoolers (n = 156) reported their attitudes toward positive/negative touch and on their children's wellbeing and sociomoral outcomes, illustrating moderate to strong positive correlations between positive touch attitudes and children's sociomoral capacities and orientations and negative correlations with psychopathology. In study 2, we used an existing longitudinal dataset, with at-risk mothers (n = 682) and their children to test touch effects on moral capacities and social behaviors in early life. Results demonstrated moderate to strong relationships between positive/negative touch and concurrent child behavioral regulation and positive correlations between low corporal punishment and child sociomoral outcomes. In a third study with adults (n = 607), we found significant mediation processes connecting retrospective reports of childhood touch to adult moral orientation through attachment security, mental health, and moral capacities. In general across studies, more affectionate touch and less punishing touch were positively associated with wellbeing and development of moral capacities and engaged moral orientation. (AU)

ABSTRACT

Neuropathic pain is a chronic debilitating symptom characterized by spontaneous pain and mechanical allodynia. It occurs in distinct forms, including brush-evoked dynamic and filament-evoked punctate mechanical allodynia. Potassium channel 2.1 (Kir2.1), which exhibits strong inward rectification, is and regulates the activity of lamina I projection neurons. However, the relationship between Kir2.1 channels and mechanical allodynia is still unclear. In this study, we first found that pretreatment with ML133, a selective Kir2.1 inhibitor, by intrathecal administration, preferentially inhibited dynamic, but not punctate, allodynia in mice with spared nerve injury (SNI). Intrathecal injection of low doses of strychnine, a glycine receptor inhibitor, selectively induced dynamic, but not punctate allodynia, not only in naïve but also in ML133-pretreated mice. In contrast, bicuculline, a GABA receptor antagonist, induced only punctate, but not dynamic, allodynia. These results indicated the involvement of glycinergic transmission in the development of dynamic allodynia. We further found that SNI significantly suppressed the frequency, but not the amplitude, of the glycinergic spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (gly-sIPSCs) in neurons on the lamina II-III border of the spinal dorsal horn, and pretreatment with ML133 prevented the SNI-induced gly-sIPSC reduction. Furthermore, 5 days after SNI, ML133, either by intrathecal administration or acute bath perfusion, and strychnine sensitively reversed the SNI-induced dynamic, but not punctate, allodynia and the gly-sIPSC reduction in lamina IIi neurons, respectively. In conclusion, our results suggest that blockade of Kir2.1 channels in the spinal dorsal horn selectively inhibits dynamic, but not punctate, mechanical allodynia by enhancing glycinergic inhibitory transmission.

ABSTRACT

This investigation was undertaken in order to know whether the postnatal tactile/kinesthetic stimulation is effective in reversing the Prenatal Stress, in the cytoarchitecture of the CA3 region of the hippocampus, in female pups. 12 pups of female rats from the Sprague-Dawley strain were distributed to Control Group (GC), the Prenatal Maternal Stress by restriction group (EP) and Prenatal Maternal Stress with postnatal tactile/ kinesthetic stimulation Group (EP-ETK). The Prenatal Maternal Stress in female pups increased neuronal density in CA3b and CA3c areas (p<0.001). When compared to Prenatal Maternal Stress, pups prenatal stress who received early tactile/kinesthetic stimulation showed a decrease in neuronal density in CA3b and CA3c areas (p < 0,001). Postnatal tactile/kinesthetic stimulation was shown to successfully reverse the Prenatal Maternal Stress effects by decreasing neuronal density in CA3b and CA3c hippocampal areas.

ABSTRACT

With the continuous development of DNA extraction and testing technology, the DNA left at a crime scene plays a decisive role in the determination of criminal suspects in criminal investigation. But in the meanwhile, the anti-reconnaissance awareness of suspect is growing, which leads to a decrease of evidence left at scene during and after a crime. Therefore, in the process of evidence collection at scene, the finding and extraction of touch biological evidence, and the DNA detection are more and more important. At present, the proportion of touch evidence at the crime scene increases, which plays an increasingly important role in the detection of cases. However, with the characteristics of minute quantities, small size and secrecy, these touch evidence is difficult to be observed. What's more, various forms of pollution at the scene greatly accelerate the degradation rate of trace material, thus, the test and analysis of such material has become the emphasis and difficulty of the forensic evidence identification. This article reviews different kinds, collection and extraction methods of touch DNA, the factors that affect the detection and the problems may meet in the detection for providing an application prospect to the forensic practice.

ABSTRACT

Human functional MRI studies in acute and various chronic pain conditions have revolutionized how we view pain, and have led to a new theory that complex multi-dimensional pain experience (sensory-discriminative, affective/motivational, and cognitive) is represented by concurrent activity in widely-distributed brain regions (termed a network or pain matrix). Despite these breakthrough discoveries, the specific functions proposed for these regions remain elusive, because detailed electrophysiological characterizations of these regions in the primate brain are lacking. To fill in this knowledge gap, we have studied the cortical areas around the central and lateral sulci of the non-human primate brain with combined submillimeter resolution functional imaging (optical imaging and fMRI) and intracranial electrophysiological recording. In this mini-review, I summarize and present data showing that the cortical circuitry engaged in nociceptive processing is much more complex than previously recognized. Electrophysiological evidence supports the engagement of a distinct nociceptive-processing network within SI (i.e., areas 3a, 3b, 1 and 2), SII, and other areas along the lateral sulcus. Deafferentation caused by spinal cord injury profoundly alters the relationships between fMRI and electrophysiological signals. This finding has significant implications for using fMRI to study chronic pain conditions involving deafferentation in humans.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Summary The mother-child bond begins to generate from conception, developing through all gestation and attachment is a type of close bond that characterizes a very sensitive relationship between the mother and the newborn. The aim of this study was to describe and characterize the attachment expressions of mothers of preterm infants from 28 to 32 weeks admitted to the Hospital Materno Neonatal Eloísa Torrent de Vidal. A quantitative, descriptive, prospective, cross - sectional study was performed with 20 mothers of preterm infants within 7 days of admission. The results obtained with respect to the variable age could be observed a minimum of 16 years, a maximum of 37 years. Regarding the variable skin-to-skin contact, 60% stated that they did not let the child lift because of the complexity, 20% were afraid to raise it because in some cases their child was very small, 15% could lift it without inconvenience, and 5 % Said he did not want to raise it. The results obtained in the analysis of the communication variable show that 65% of the mothers speak to their child during the visit and only 5% remain silent. The realization of this research study showed that mothers have expressions of attachment to their newborn interned in the Unit of Neonatal Intensive Care, especially those linked to the expectation of verbal. As a negative factor in this mother-child dyad it was observed the difficulty of raising it by its complexity. This situation was also linked to limitations in touch and caresses, complementary elements for the generation of reciprocal and affective attachment.

ABSTRACT

@#<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>BACKGROUND:</strong> Rabies is an important zoonotic disease that needs to be eradicated worldwide. It is still prevalent in the Philippines, thus development of a relatively affordable but still accurate and rapid post-mortem detection test for the virus is desired, especially in regional laboratories.<br /><strong>METHODS:</strong>The study evaluated the Direct Rapid Immunohistochemical Testing (DRIT) of hippocampal touch impressions of suspected rabid Canis lupus familiaris using monospecific N protein polyclonal antibody developed by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM). One hundred sixty (160) acetone-fixed hippocampal touch impressions were subjected DRIT.<br /><strong>RESULTS:</strong> One hundred thirteen (70.6%) out of 160 samples tested positive for rabies viral antigen (RVA) and 47 (29.4%) out of 160 samples tested negative for RVA. No false positive and false negative results were obtained. The results agree with the gold standard, dFAT.<br /><strong>CONCLUSION:</strong> DRIT was able to detect low to high concentrations of RVA in the hippocampal touch impressions based on the grading distribution. DRIT had 100% sensitivity, specificity and over-all accuracy using monospecific polyclonal antibodies, which suggests its use as a more affordable alternative to the gold standard dFAT.</p>

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To determine the effect of elastic strain rate ratio method and virtual touch tissue quantification (VTQ) on the diagnosis of breast masses.
@*METHODS@#Sixty female patients with breast cancer, who received surgical treatment in Daqing Oilfield General Hospital, were enrolled. All patients signed the informed consent paperwork and they were treated by routine ultrasound examination, compression elastography (CE) examination, and VTQ examination in turn. Strain ratio (SR) was checked by CE and shear wave velocity (SWV) value was measured by VTQ. The diagnostic values of different methods were evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves in the diagnosis of benign and malignant breast tumors.
@*RESULTS@#The maximum diameter and SWV value of the benign tumors were lower than those of the malignant tumors, and the SR ratio of benign masses was higher than that of malignant tumors (P<0.01). The AUC, sensitivity and specificity for elastic strain rate and VTQ for single or combined use were higher than those of conventional ultrasound (0.904, 97.5%, 69.2%; 0.946, 87.5%, 87.2%; 0.976, 90%, 97.4% vs 0.783, 85%, 61.5%). The AUC and specificity of VTQ were higher than those of the elastic strain rate (0.946, 87.2% vs 0.904, 69.2%), but the sensitivity of VTQ was higher than that of the latter (87.5% vs 97.5%). The AUC and specificity for combination of both methods were higher than those of single method, but the sensitivity was lower than that of the elastic strain rate.
@*CONCLUSION@#Combination of elastic strain rate ratio method with VTQ possesses the best diagnostic value and the highest diagnostic accuracy in the diagnosis of breast mass than that used alone.
